Happy YASSSletter Thursday, Gingis!

Last week we were all about the honey, and this week we are all about the apples! Apples & honey, a match made in heaven. Whether you have vivid memories of dipping apple in honey on the eve of Rosh Hashanah or simply memories of apple picking with your friends and family - this Apples YASSSletter edition is for you!

So without further ado…here are three APPLE recipes to help you use up your fall time abundance!

History & Origin: Apples & Rosh Hashanah

  • Sweetness and Blessings: The apple is often associated with sweetness, making it a perfect symbol for Rosh Hashanah. During this time, it's customary to dip apples in honey, signifying the hope for a sweet and prosperous year ahead. This act represents a desire for positive experiences and blessings in the coming year.

  • Cyclical Renewal: The circular shape of the apple is symbolic of the cyclical nature of life and time. Just as the seasons repeat, Rosh Hashanah marks the beginning of a new year in the Jewish calendar, offering an opportunity for renewal and growth.

  • Knowledge and Temptation: In some interpretations, the apple is also associated with the story of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. While not directly connected to Rosh Hashanah, the narrative of the apple representing knowledge and the potential for both good and bad choices can be related to the theme of introspection and repentance during the holiday.

If this isn’t the MOST nostalgic cake of all time, that I don’t know what is? Zikki and I grew up in two different cultures, with two different religions, on opposite sides of the world yet somehow both of our grandmothers made this exact cake. Its fluffy, yet crisp around the edges, and absolutely downright addicting!

We love this recipe because it is SO simple and perfect if you are strapped for a delicious dessert last minute with only pantry things to help you out of a sticky situation! Loaded with apples and seasoned with Baharat, this warm and gooey crumble is perfect when served with a dollop of Vanilla Ice Cream! YASSS!

We’ve been making so many trays of Baklava for our events over the summer that I couldn’t help myself and think - what if I did a Rosh Hashanah themed Apples & Honey version of this insanely addictive Turkish treat? And yes, I included a recipe to make your own phyllo sheets because THAT is how much I love baking! The result? Pure Perfection!

Hope you have a weekend full of YASSS! Until next Thursday Gingis.

Love, Ben & Zikki xx
