Happy YASSSletter Thursday Gingis!
Wow wow wow!!! This week has been nothing short of insanity. We are a Jewish AND Christan household, so the spring time (especially April) is a wild time with us. This year we decided that we would host the holidays, especially because it is Baby T's first run around the sun. The holiday season began last night with the post incredible, spiritual, and truly delicious Passover Seder...maybe ever.
Our table was filled with an array of wonderful friends, from different backgrounds (some expereincing the Seder for the first time) and circles, coming together to celebrate freedom. We read the Haggadah and drank copious amounts of natural wine. We feasted on matzo ball soup, a divine salad collection, and a 12 hour braised Yemenite style beef shank. BLESS UP! For dessert we had a decadent cheesecake that we topped with strawberries and pomegranate seeds, perfectly paired with a glass of red wine to finish off the beautiful evening.
So today, our newsletter will three beautiful recipes. One, Matzo Brei for those of your who still have an enormous amount of Matzo at home. This recipe is perfect for Passover week and super easy - great for soaking up all the Seder vinoooo!
Secondly, we have not 1, but TWO recipes for hot cross buns coming your way to kick off the upcoming EASTER season. The original is made as it's been for centuries, while the 2.0 uses icing and chocolate chips for a modern rendition. Both delicate and DELIGHTFUL!
So without further ado!

🍊Hot Cross Buns 2.0 (Chocolate Chips + Icing)
Yo Yo Yo Gingis, I'm so excited to share with you this recipe! Hot cross buns are a delicious Easter tradition that has been enjoyed for centuries (more history below under the OG). These soft and fluffy buns are made with a rich dough that's filled with raisins, apricots, figs, and spices like cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg. The buns are marked with a cross, which symbolizes the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. This time, I decided to pipe a sweet icing cross after baking, rather than piping a flour based batter and then bake it.
🐰 Hot Cross Buns (the OG)
SO...onto the history of these bad boys! Hot cross buns have a long and varied history, dating back to ancient civilizations such as Egypt, Greece, and Rome. The exact origin of the hot cross bun as we know it today is not known for certain, but there are many myths and legends surrounding its creation and significance.
One popular legend traces the history of hot cross buns back to a 14th-century monk in St Albans, England, who distributed spiced buns with the sign of the cross on them to the poor on Good Friday. The tradition of baking and distributing these buns spread throughout England and eventually to other countries.
In the 16th century, Queen Elizabeth I decreed that hot cross buns could only be sold on Good Friday, Christmas, and at burials. This led to their popularity and to the creation of the nursery rhyme "Hot Cross Buns", which is still sung today.
Hot cross buns have undergone many changes over the centuries. Originally, they were made with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice, and sometimes contained fruit and honey. Today, they are typically made with currants or raisins and are spiced with cinnamon and sometimes cloves or ginger.
Regardless of their specific ingredients, hot cross buns remain a popular treat around the world, especially during the Easter season, and their history and cultural significance continue to be celebrated.
🫓 Matzah Brei
Now for those of you who enjoyed yourselves a little extra last night and really leaned into the "relaxation" sector of Passover, this is the perfect breakfast to soak up the alcohol and put your used Matzah to work! For those of you who didn't celebrate Passover last night, this is still an excellent recipe to try out for a simple and hardy breakfast. Nothing better than Matzo Brei covered generously with Maple Syrup. Mama Mia, so flipping GOOD!
The winner 🏆 of last week's poll about pizza toppings was...(drum roll please!): 🥦 VEGGIE! By a LONG shot! Who knew? We are a community of bread appreciators and vegetable connoisseurs.
⁉️ Gingis, last night's Seder got us thinking about 🍷 wine. What is your favorite kind? |
Hope you have a weekend full of YASSS! Until next Thursday Gingis.
Love, Ben & Zikki xx
