Strawberry Season at the Union Square Market this week!

Hello beautiful people of the YASSSletter, we have just arrived in Israel and we couldn’t be happier to be with our family and friends. It is hot and humid in the very best ways, with touch and taste of the Mediterranean in the breeze. With our arrival here in Israel, we are already eating so many fruits because they really are just the best. But today’s newsletter is about our favorite fruit of season!

Strawberries! These bright and juicy berries are the center of our world, especially because they are lady T’s favorite food in the universe. So without further ado, let’s jump right in!

  1. 📜 History & Origin Story: Strawberry

  2. 🍓 Strawberry Sandwich (Japanese Milk Bread & Whipped Cream)

  3. 🍓 Strawberry, Feta, Basil Summer Salad Recipe

History & Origin Story: Strawberry

Strawberries have a long and fascinating history that dates back thousands of years. The modern garden strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa) that we commonly enjoy today is actually a hybrid species that was developed in the 18th century, but the cultivation and consumption of wild strawberries can be traced back much further.

Wild strawberries have been consumed by humans since ancient times. They were gathered from forests and used as a food source in various regions around the world. The ancient Romans appreciated wild strawberries for their medicinal properties and considered them a symbol of Venus, the goddess of love.

Did you know that strawberries were considered a symbol of Venus?

Strawberries are enjoyed fresh, used in various culinary preparations, and can be found in a wide range of products like jams, jellies, pies, ice cream, and more. They are also a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants, making them a healthy and delicious treat.

🍓 Japanese Strawberry Sando

This Japanese Strawberry Sando is just pure FUN and tastes just like a strawberry shortcake but without the effort! This sandwich can easily be made on a store bought Japanese milk bread, but I decided why the heck not…let just make this sexy Shokupan. Recipe for it below.

🍓 Strawberry, Feta & Basil Summer Salad

This strawberry salad is absolutely perfect for this summer season. A bright and color salad loaded juicy and jumbo strawberries, tangy feta cheese, freshly roasted hazelnuts, aromatic basil, and a gorgeous balsamic lime vinegrette. Using the market’s freshest leaves and your favorite mustard greens, make this glorious salad.

Hope you have a weekend full of YASSS! Until next Thursday Gingis.

Love, Ben & Zikki xx
